Dear Mrs. Lewes,
I wrote enclosed in the Examiner, 162 and it fairly expresses my feelings on the subject. I wish I could send you any comfort; I cannot -- only my warmest prayers.
I don't know to this hour what caused the estrangement between Mr. Lewes and myself, nor do I now wish to know. 163 In the shadow of the grave, nothing but love should dwell, and there is only love in my heart. I believe this -- that your husband had no more affectionate admirer than myself.
Forgive this line, and accept the assurance of my deepest sympathy and respect.
