George Eliot's Reading

SCROLL DOWN FOR ALL 923 TEXTS

George Eliot’s Reading (2025), a subproject of the George Eliot Archive, is a digitized, open-access library of 923 texts that George Eliot is known to have read, as documented in her diaries, correspondence, and book reviews. This resource is the result of rigorous scholarly work over several years by the George Eliot Archive editorial team, which was carefully edited and completed by Graduate Research Assistant Sarah Guyer in 2023-24.

The project grew from an idea to compile a comprehensive index of Eliot’s reading that Dr. Mary Bell, University of Arizona, shared with Dr. Beverley Rilett in 2019. Inspired by Bell's prototype, the Archive team began researching and synthesizing data from the following major sources:

  1. George Eliot’s own letters and diaries
  2. The Open University's UK Reading Experience Database (UK RED)
  3. Avrom Fleischman’s "George Eliot's Reading: A Chronological List," George Eliot - George Henry Lewes Studies, 2008.

This multi-source approach provided a more comprehensive and accurate reconstruction of Eliot’s intellectual environment.

Each entry in the collection includes:

Whenever possible, texts are presented in their original languages, with English translations provided. The resource reflects Eliot’s impressive multilingualism—she knew seven languages—and her broad intellectual range, encompassing literature, religion, philosophy, politics, science, and more.

Research Value:

This collection offers scholars unprecedented access to the texts that informed Eliot’s thought. We expect the resource to facilitate the following kinds of scholarship:

Ultimately, George Eliot’s Reading transforms the study of Eliot by providing a searchable, scalable platform for examining how the works she read helped shape her creative output and critical thought. It also fulfills the George Eliot Archive’s mission to centralize and make accessible everything related to Eliot’s life and work.
