George Eliot's Social Network Gallery

Scroll down. In this gallery (and in the interactive visualization of George Eliot’s social network) you will find information about George Eliot's relationships with friends, family members, and business associates.

We have written brief biographical notes for more than 125 individuals who were connected to George Eliot. We also provide portraits from the public domain, whenever possible. The summaries focus more on each person's relationship with Eliot, rather than on their individual accomplishments. More individuals will be added in our next update.

The summaries, largely informed by the indispensable Oxford Reader's Companion to George Eliot (2001) edited by John Rignall, represent the collaborative writing of Dr. Rilett with several research assistants, including (in alphabetical order): Sydney BatySusannah Boyer, Megan Ekstrom, Lindsay Roberts, Maxwell Robeson, Brandon Unverferth, and Hollie Tucker. The visualization model was coded by Riley Jhi in 2018 and updated in 2022 by Libo (Donald) Sun.

The George Eliot Archive team appreciates the editorial assistance in 2020 of Dr. John Rignall and Dr. Kathleen McCormack for suggestions and corrections. Your feedback (including suggested corrections) is always welcome at bdr0032@auburn.edu  - Beverley Park Rilett.
